Frequently Asked Questions

Home  /  Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients have questions about their dental care and we are more than happy to answer any queries or concerns that you may have. The more you understand about your proposed treatment, the less worried and anxious you will feel.

Will I feel any pain during my treatment?

We discuss pain relief methods with you and ensure that you are fully numbed before we commence any treatment so you should not feel any pain during any of your dental appointments. Some treatments can leave you feeling uncomfortable afterwards so we will discuss aftercare with you.

What if I have a dental emergency?

If you suffer from a dental emergency, please contact us as soon as possible and we aim to see you within 24 hours. Emergency appointments are worked into our schedule so we can often see you that same day.

The sooner our team see you, the more we can control any further damage so your dentist will assess the situation and explain the best course of action.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

Many people suffer from gum disease in varying severity. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to further issues so it is best to contact your dentist if you experience any of these following symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums during or after brushing or flushing your teeth.
  • Teeth appearing longer and the roots becoming exposed.
  • Tender, swollen and/or red gums.
  • Uneven gum line.
  • Your teeth becoming noticeably loose or dentures not fitting correctly.
  • Noticeable spaces appearing between your teeth.
  • Hot or cold temperature sensitivity.
  • Bad breath and/or an unpleasant taste lingering even after brushing your teeth
  • Persistent dry mouth and/or a burning sensation.

What is root canal treatment?

Your teeth contain nerves which are contained in the root canal, the inner most part of the tooth. If these become injured or infected, they can cause a lot of pain and this can only be resolved by the nerve being removed. Your practitioner will make a small hole in the top of the affected tooth and then remove the nerve and thoroughly clean it. The tooth is then filled with a sterile, stabilising material and the hole in it is sealed.

Why do I need my teeth cleaned regularly?

Even if you brush and floss your teeth thoroughly, plaque and bacteria can accumulate, hardening into tartar. Plaque and tartar can allow bacteria to penetrate your teeth and gums leading to disease and decay so we recommend regular teeth cleaning by a dental hygienist to ensure that your teeth and gums are completely cleaned and tartar is removed.

Can you help me feel less anxious?

We understand that some patients feel anxious about receiving dental treatment and always treat you with sensitivity and understanding. We believe that understanding each stage of your dental treatment and what it entails will help you to feel less nervous so we take the time to discuss this with you in great depth, answer any queries you may have and will not commence any treatment unless you are completely happy.

We create a relaxing atmosphere and make sure that you are informed every step of the way, and use an in-house team so you will always see a familiar face. You can have access to intravenous sedation for more complex and in-depth treatments if necessary, which lowers consciousness and increases patient comfort. Please ask us for more details.

How often should I see my dentist?

If you maintain a good oral health routine, you should only need to visit your dentist twice a year. However, if you are at higher risk of issues such as gum disease or experience any other oral health problems, you may have to visit more often.

Can you make my teeth look whiter?

Yes, we understand that a white, healthy smile can really boost your confidence and can offer you exclusive, cutting edge teeth whitening systems such as Enlighten and Zoom WhiteSpeed which can be administered in-clinic or at home. These treatments are fast, provide effective results and are completely safe.

What is a dental implant?

As well as making your smile look uneven and unsightly, a missing tooth can lead to issues with the surrounding teeth. We can easily replace one or more missing teeth with dental implants which are anchored into place with titanium fixtures. Dental implants can be combined with other treatments including bridges and dentures and give the appearance and functionality of your natural teeth.

What can I do to help minimise future dental problems?

As well as brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, maintaining a healthy diet that is low in simple sugars can help to protect your teeth.
